About Small Steps for Big Changes

SSBC is a free, evidence-based lifestyle intervention program designed to help people at risk for type 2 diabetes make lasting changes to their health.

Our Vision

Small Steps for Big Changes (SSBC) is a diabetes prevention program created by the Diabetes Prevention Research Group at the University of British Columbia. Our goal is to help Canadians who are at risk for type 2 diabetes make small, manageable changes to how they move and eat — changes that can significantly reduce their risk.

We believe that preventing type 2 diabetes doesn't require drastic lifestyle overhauls. By working with trained coaches in familiar community settings like YMCAs, participants receive personalized support that meets them where they are. No strict diets, no gym memberships required — just practical, evidence-based strategies that fit into real life.

Our Journey

2002

The Science Begins

The landmark Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) study in the United States shows that lifestyle intervention reduces diabetes risk by 58% — even more effective than medication. This research inspires efforts worldwide to translate these findings into real-world programs.

2012

Pilot Program

Dr. Mary Jung at UBC Okanagan launches a pilot study with 32 adults at risk for type 2 diabetes. Participants receive individual coaching to make small lifestyle changes. The results are promising — participants show meaningful improvements in physical activity and health markers.

2016

Randomized Controlled Trial

A larger study with 100 participants confirms the program's effectiveness. Small Steps for Big Changes is shown to help adults at risk of type 2 diabetes increase their physical activity levels and improve clinical outcomes. The program is published in peer-reviewed journals.
