About Prediabetes

Understanding prediabetes is the first step toward preventing type 2 diabetes. Here's what you need to know.

What Is Prediabetes?

Prediabetes means your blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not yet high enough to be diagnosed as type 2 diabetes. It's a warning sign — but the good news is that with the right changes, you can often prevent or delay the progression to diabetes.

In Canada, approximately 6 million people are living with prediabetes. Many don't even know it, because prediabetes often has no noticeable symptoms.

Risk Factors

You may be at higher risk for prediabetes and type 2 diabetes if any of the following apply to you.

Family History

A parent, sibling, or close relative with type 2 diabetes.

Overweight

A BMI of 25 or higher (23 or higher for some ethnic groups).

Inactive Lifestyle

Getting less than 150 minutes of moderate physical activity per week.

Age

Being 40 years or older (or 30+ for certain higher-risk groups).

Gestational Diabetes

A history of diabetes during pregnancy.

Ethnicity

Indigenous, South Asian, East Asian, African, or Hispanic descent.

What You Can Do

Research shows that making modest lifestyle changes can reduce your risk of developing type 2 diabetes by up to 58%. You don't need to make dramatic changes — small steps really do add up.

  • Move more: Aim for 150 minutes of moderate activity per week — like brisk walking.
  • Eat well: Focus on whole grains, vegetables, lean protein, and healthy fats.
  • Lose a little: Even a 5–7% weight loss can significantly reduce your risk.
  • Get support: Programs like SSBC provide personalized coaching to help you succeed.
